I think Linux uses this image format for icons.
.XPM stands for X PixMap, (Also known as X-Bitmap).
    IrfanView can open .XPM

It might also help us help you if we had more of an idea what you actually want the image for?

    Oh

Thank you for the prompt answer.

I only know that JWM uses *.xpm

but not only JWM, the very important system manager Grub for multi boot also

so I think it is a good idea to know how to manage itself such projects because a pretty computer start screen is very appreciated by all.

in the first time I would be happy to produce only very easy picture with my favorite drawing system Xaralm (because it is so easy and I am absolutely not experimented in artistic drawings...), shrink them if needed, save them in *.xpm format with an adequate memory size, resolution and screen size

I did find an example for the splash picture for Grub here

    http://www.geeksonthebeach.ca/simple...-examples.html

but its concern more the processing under the view of grub (under using of gimp) and less the artistic problem and the problem of transformation of the drawing parameters to make memory size, resolution and screen size adequate.
