You can use .png or .gif for your favicon. It doesn't have to be .ico

how do i cretae 32x32 and 16x16 layered ico files within xtreme like i can in thumbsplus?

Xtreme cannot export multi-layer .ico format

You can create your images in their various size and export as .bmp to TP instead.
Remember that Xara Xtreme is a vector based illustration application which has some bitmap handling capabilities.

i don't want to handle the bitmap in xara, only draw in vector and export to bitmap
