One of the sites that I will be developing will present a vast amount of arhaeological and anthopological data (text and graphics). I'm trying to approach the project in the most sensible way possible (understanding, as best I can, any limitations that Xara Web Designer might present). The input so far has been helpful. Thanks.

I agree with a number of comments that you should limit the size of the files on the web site to make it easy to manage and update.
You may have a file you regularly update. That could remain separate using links. It makes it easy and quicker to upload.
What I do is to make an index page (more like an index in a book)with all the links which is easy in WD. This is among about five pages my index.htm file. This makes the initial part of the web to load very quickly.
