    Cool Centering text.

I understand the reason for removing the stretch handles from text. But I used those small black squares as centering devices. I'm pretty good at eyeballing positions however some times it's nice to easily center text using the stretch handles as a visual aid.

My suggestion is to replace the stretch handle locations with "Arrows" or a thin guide line to use for centering.

    Not a bad idea John.

Here's another way to succeed at centering your text in WD.

Works well with upper case text but lower case text with "dropy down" bits ("y", "g", etc) causes problems.

John is there a reason you do not use the Alignment dialog to center objects?

@Egg - I always wondered what the 'technical term' was for those lower parts of lower case letters.

I'm getting the same result using the Xara alignment tool (lower image) as I am using the long winded method I came up with ( because I could )

Yes, it's a technical term which we normally try to avoid ;-)

Steve, try a similar alignment but with the text containing no dropy down bits. The alignment is different. Adobe Flash does this as well and the only solution I've found is to use all Upper Case characters, thus avoiding the dreaded dropy down bits.

If you want to be real technical, the 'dropy down bits' are called descenders, while the 'sticky up bits' are called ascenders.

In this case the technical term for 'dropy down bits' is quite attractive. Put on some Barry White music and in a deep sexy voice say "ohh descender baby --- you are font-astic".

'Dropy down bits' is what real working people call them, descenders are only for professors and people who own poodles called Snuggles.
