Covoxer, I see your around now. CAN YOU HELP ME GET A BETTER UNDERSTANDING ABOUT THIS?

Attached is a .web file which I hope explains the issue and a .web template that I want to apply the process to.

Use names that end with a digit(s).

    Question Still Having Problems

John, I tried your suggestion but it still seems to fail.

Attached is the original .Xar and the resulting .Web file.

Note, after exporting the .Web file via XaraPro, I opened that .Web file in XWD and saved again as a .Web file.

Your files don't work. But when I do it from the scratch here, it works well.
    What I do:
    in XXP4
    1. Crate shape with name "anything1"
    2. Create text column with name "textthyng1"
    3. For the shepe set to stretch by "textthyng1". Do nothing with text.
    4. Test - type something, shape stretches.
    5. Group both objects.
    6. Ctrl+C

    in WD:
    7. Ctrl+V
    8. Type some text - shape stretches.
    9. Drag+rightclick copy created.
    10. Type something in new text - new shape stretches.

Doesn't it work this way for you?

I probably missed or *******ized a step. Let me follow these instructions to the letter.

    Get back to you soon.

    John:

    Your procedure worked!

    My procedure was:

1- Create shape (convert shape to editable object)
2- Create regular text (not column text)
3- Assign names and apply stretchy property to background shape (using the process you just describe).
    4- Do not group
    5- Save .xar file
    6- Export to .web
7- Open .web file in XWD

And that worked! What also works now is not grouping the text with the background. What also works now is NOT putting a digit at the end to the object names!

I don't know what heck happened. Perhaps way back when creating my initial file it got corrupted somehow and the process of reusing it in other files it perpetuated the problem.

Hi J's, I think I am missing something here. I tried what has been said but nothing stretches. In no 3 how do you set the shape to stretch by textthing1?...can someone please supply a xara file so I can look at it...thanks tao

    Mr. T:

Try these. The .web is result of exporting the .xar file. I just finished these so hopefully they aren't dodgey.
Open the .xar file and the Name Gallery and then examine.

When you open the .web file, right-click an object, then choose Names and leave the Names dialog open. After that, control-click on text and background objects and observe the Names dialog.

    Roger,

In the name gallery, click the object. Change the action box to stretches, and click the green triangle .... See picture
