Hmm - without seeing your PC it would be tricky. But then this is BETA software we talking about.

My installation of W7 is standard 32bit, no special permissions.
I use AntVir only, no other security software.
The Windows\winsxs folder has no special permissions applied by myself.
Trusted Installers have permission to access \winsxs - so there shouldn't be an issue.
My only suggestion at this stage is that the download was slightly corrupt. Try re downloading the setup file again (GoogleSketchUpWEN.exe)

my system pretty much sounds like yours - only AntiVirus and the only other software installed in Xara. The google software is the exact file I used on the Vista partition, which installed with no issues.

Glenn are you logged into Windows 7 with an Administrator permissions account?

Google Sketchup 7 installed without problems and no problems running the program.

ok - update - I told Steve that I used the same file - well I used a copy that I pulled over from the Vista partition - I just ran the actual file FROM the Vista drive and it installed in 20 seconds with no errors.... who would have thought!... I'm getting old and senile...
    thanks for all your suggestions....

I installed the 64 bit version of the Windows 7 beta on my computer ( a desktop Gateway, model 5668E, which has an AMD Athlon 64 X2 dual core processor 6000+ 3.00 ghz CPU )

The installation went very smoothly, and the display looks noticibly more crisp, and the computer is generally more snappy in every way.

    However, it isn't perfect.
    - On occasion it will hang in the boot up process.
Just stays on the Windows splash screen indefinitely. I have to unplug the computer to regain control.

    - Xara Xtreme 4 won't install. I get an error message that tells me that it must be installed on an different version of Windows.

    - Corel Painter Essentials 4 will install , but gets hung up and stalls half way through the start-up of the program. Stops responding, windows problem window comes up, etc.

So as nice as it is, I plan on uninstalling it. Oh well...

Andy install Xara Xtreme 4 in Vista compatibility mode. That was discussed in the beginning of this thread.

The boot up hanging may be an indication there is an incorrect or missing hardware driver. Open Control Panel and then Device Manager. Check to see if any device has an error icon displayed.

Andy as a BETA tester you are expected to use it a bit more often before crying 'Uncle'

The idea IS to find problems, and the report them. This allows MS to fix them before the commercial release.

I have been using it since it became public.
I like it a lot. While it still looks looks like Vista the performance is 10x better.

According to this, XP users will be allowed to upgrade but with a clean install, whereas Vista users will be able to install over the top.
