What would cause this message when I try to make changes to my desktop appearance?

Hi Ron,
If you are using a 3rd party theme application such as WindowBlinds then the system file uxtheme.dll will have been modified to allow this (by default Microsoft do not allow 3rd party themes to be applied).
If you have just recently updated to Windows XP SP3, then the uxtheme.dll will have been replaced by Microsfts SP3 version. This is one reason for the error message. Of course, there may be other reasons, such as a corrupt theme or missing files.

There is a multi-patcher for a SP3 replaced uxtheme.dll available

I downloaded the *.rar file, but I don't know what to do with it. I tried double clicking the file but it is unknown to Windows. I can't find any instructions on the website as to what to do with the file.

a .rar file is a compressed file Ron [like a zip file] - you will need to extract the contents with an archive program such as Winrar or 7-zip [free]

Thank you Steve. What do I do with the *.dll file once I've extracted it?

Also, once I've moved it to where ever it goes, do I have to reboot my machine?

I downloaded the extraction program and unzipped the file. After unzipping it, it created a new folder and inside the folder was only one file, the dll file.

Ron there is no .dll file in the zip I have attached to my previous post. Inside is the UXTender.exe file which will unpack and install the updated .dll
Once done you will need to reboot the PC for the new .dll to be loaded.

Ok, I ran the UXTender.exe file, my screen went black and then restored and asked me if I wanted to reboot so I did.

But I still get the same error message as was first posted.
