I like the first of these two. The depth of filed doesn't look quiet right on the second shot. Don't get me wrong. Both shots are awesome. Maybe you could try a second copy of just the accentuated part, with a linear fade to make the DOF fade out and not be so abrupt at the body. Is it worth a try?

Pretty nice rich. I think the top one is a touch too bright, you might want to tone it down a touch. The second one looks really great.

I guess it depends how your monitor (and/or video card) setting is John. Looks perfect on my screen

The bottom one suffers a bit from the shadows across the wings.
The top photo is, well a top photo

    John,

The Black Dragon was shot with flash. I mostly need to have short times to compensate for my lack of stillness.

I was choosing vasious images to test the application. I was trying to mark the effect area better to prevent artifacts in the background area.

I tried to do multiple sessions on an image, but it seems I needed to save out each time.

    nice Pics Rich...

    okay Steve,

How about the top one in his set? I think it is too washed out. Not enough contrast. At least that is how it shows up on my screen.

The second one is great. If the DOF was a little more it would be an awesome shot. When one is doing Macros, the DOF can drive you crazy. Rich, did you use a macro lens, or a macro lens filter thing? Nice example of short DOF. What was the F-stop on this? between one and two?

    John,

100mm Macro lens at the minimum focal point. I think that in 9 inches from the sensor. The lens is about 6 inches long. So, front of the lens to target is about 3 inches.
Hand held. No time for a tripod.

Wow... In that case, it was an excellent shot. Trying to get a shot like that handheld is just durn lucky. The F-stop had to be at about minimum I bet for that DOF.

    John,

F11, 125 & ETTL on camera fash. I made an off camera fixture, but dragonfly are a momentary thing. The flash degrade rapidly with distance. I was close enough to possible decrease the aperature. This close, I would have been in manual focus. The camera doesn't always auto focus this close. Now, the ploblem is me trying to hold the camera within a few mils.
