    Default PGM file not importing

    Hi

Ive tried to import a PGM file that Xara Xtreme Pro 4.01.5601 can't import

The file is a Cardiac MRI file, which is multi-layered.

The file is from the public domain French CINE heart database.

    that exists at

    http://www.laurentnajman.org/heart/

You'll probably find these files quite interesting.

I tried to attach a 440Kb size PGM sample file for you to try but talkgraphics wasn't able cope. Tells me it's an invalid file format. I suspect that you do a file check with the same import filter that Xara uses ?

You can upload a copy of the heart database from the website form
    the following page

    http://www.laurentnajman.org/heart/H_data.html

Look for the compressed *.tgz file and pull out one of the 18 patient samples each about 300 to 400 KB in size.

Source code for the file structure can be found here:

    http://www.laurentnajman.org/heart/H_programs.html

Hope you can get Xara to import these, and I hope its not too curly a request for you !

Looking forward to working with the data in Xara - even if its one static slice of the data

    Cheers
    G.

    Welcome to the Xtreme Conference.

Because this file format is not supported in Xtreme, you need to find a common format, such as PDF or PSD with layers, to convert this file to if you want to open and view this kind of file.

As I am sure you are aware, there are hundreds of kinds of files, some of them very esoteric, and no program can, or should, support them all.

This format appears to be specific of medical needs, which is not an area of focus for Xtreme.

A google search indicates that Irfanview and XnView can open .pgm files.

It has been years since I used either of those programs but I believe you can save to another graphic format from them.

    Hi all,

    Thanks for the replies.

The file consists of multiple layers of MRI image slices showing a heart.

Irfanview V3.95 is unable to open this.

XnView V1.74 pulls in part of the image (which looks like one cross section) but then chokes.

Thanks for the advice of zipping the file - have done so and one sample PGM file is attached.

Yes - thanks for the feedback that the file format is not supported in Xara. Disappointing but I can understand there is a lack of immediate commercial incentive. Being "the" graphics tool for researchers gives you exposure to the academic community. And they guide the guys that take these tools to commercial industries, so its not too bad an investment in the future

Anyway I support Xara for technical illustration.

    Cheers

I could not get anything I have to open it. The closest I got was CD and that just had a couple lines of text with nothing else. AI crashed.

XN view (1.82.4) opened something, see attached (but not anything that I expected to see) ...

I tried using a trial version of Image Convertor Plus that seem to support more image formats than anything else I have ever seen. It wouldn't even recognise it as an image file.

You could try sending their support service the file and asking them if it's possible to convert it.
