Auto tracing will never give you such a result, I'm afraid there's no quick fix result to get what you appear to want..
Manual tracing or just using a photo for a referrence is the most common method. Some people are gifted enough to draw similar illustrations without referrence images or even tracing. It all depends on your skills, determination and practice.
If you can draw well with pencil and paper, then adapting your skills to software such as Xara Xtreme is a matter of only your time and patience..

The first attachment is a drawing with outline view.

The second attachment is a trace of a jpg of the drawing and the outline of the trace.

A trace finds similar colour groups and creates a shape.

A drawing creates shapes and uses fills to give the shape definition.

As far as I am aware no illustration in any Xara Xtreme gallery is simply a photo or scanned image to which an effect has been applied (by way of an automatic process such as a plugin).
All Xtreme featured artists and practically everything you see posted here at TG in the Xtreme forum are illustrations (drawings) created by using the drawing tools provided by the application and the skills and practice of the artist.

I expect you have come from a Raster editor background (such as photoshop) where plugin filters are commonly used to alter photos etc.
Xara Xtreme is first and foremost a Vector illustration package, however it can handle raster images as well (jpg, png, bmp etc) - often better than PS.
Plugins can be used to enhance a hand drawn illustration, but generally not to actually create one.

PS: Yes, Jose Campoy's examples are drawings.

One more thing, how do I apply the gloosy look to an image like on the car images in the gallery?

When you draw on a PC (or on paper) you are simply replicating the effect 'light' has on any given surface.
You can easily reproduce shine and gloss when you consider this.
So look for light (or lack of it) when you colour your shapes and try to reproduce that look.
Using Xtremes transparency and feathering tools, almost all variations of light on a surface can be acheived.

In the clipart gallery there are two folders of examples, where the xara artists have graciously given there art to be used to learn. You can NOT use it to pass as your own, or really to even modify it and sell. They are letting you look at how all the shapes are put together to make a realistic image.

Look for the folders "Examples Xara Xtreme drawings 1" and "Examples Xara Xtreme drawings 2". I would suggest looking at the files called "Mina Moiseev" or "Tchaikovsky".

The best example in my most humble opinion is this piece...Sarah X
