Default Error Message: Unable to connect to Xara Picture Editor...

    Hello,

don't know what has happened - today in the morning my windows update started automaticly (Vista64) and after reboot i can not work with XTREME without this error message either when i try to take the plugin tool when i use a picture or when i select a picture and click in the menu on "Utilities"

It only works when i deinstall XARA and install it, but after rebooting my system i am not able to work with the picture editor anymore...

Are there any solutions for this...

for most [though maybe not all] cases one solution is to use the xtreme photo tool rather than XPE
this is what xara recommend in version 4 [as XPE is being phased out apparently]

Yes maybe, but i even cannot open files anymore that i edited with the Plugin-Tool, because before the file gets opened i see the warning window and after this Xtreme crashes....

No chance to open/edit old files wich i edited with "Utilities" "Bitmap Editor"...

are you saying that the program crashes as soon as you click on the utilites menu - you get no further?

it does sound like a vista issue, I can't help there sorry

but hopefully someone will - meanwhile did you try running XPE from its program folder as suggested [with xtreme closed]?

Try this and let us know:

Go to Options>Effects & Plugins and deselect XPE as the editor (put a dot in the 'Edit bitmaps with this program' but don't enter any program). Apply and OK. Exit Xtreme and then restart it.

Plugins are still available via the toolbar plugin tool, and bitmap editing via the toolbar bitmap tool - nothing really is lost by not having the bitmap editor.

XPE is not really to be used, as Steve says, it's being phased out entirely.

The program crashes as soon as i try to open a once with this tools edited file -
When i try to run XPE from its program folder i get the attached DLL Error

    Hi sledger,

no it do not work - no matter if i leave the field blank and restart it or if i set the dot to the other Xtreme Program - always the same error window...

Oh...is it really this way that i need to reinstall it all the time only that i can work with the plugins...

    ooooohhhhh.....

If it is a Vista problem, wich i think of then more people should have this, if it was the automatic update from this morning...but i do not really know exactly if this is true....

    Hi Michael,

Any reason why you have chosen to install Xtreme outside of the OS programs folder?

Can you please re install and allow the installer to use the default folder:

    C:\Program Files\Xara\Xara Xtreme Pro 4

then check to see if the error continues?

    Hi Steve,

    Because Vista sometimes disallows the editing of sytem or files inside the program files;

    Code:
There were some posts on other fora about the uac and software
that didn't work like it should
The thing suggested were to turn off uac
    1) Disable the UAC in control panel of Vista.
Open control panel and click on user accounts and
in there you can untick user account control.

    2) Uninstall and re-install straight onto your C drive.
don't put it in the program files directory.

Maybe this might solve future problems

It does sound like a Vista UAC issue.

Michael do you have the UAC (User Account Control) enabled?

If so you may need to reinstall Xtreme but do not allow the autorun to start the RunCD.exe program.

Use My Computer or Windows Explorer to navigate to the root of the CD and then right click runCD.exe and select Run as administrator from the popup menu.

I personally do not use the UAC and have it disabled. Vista runs beautifully and none of the issues that most people complain about the OS.
