    Try this:

    stage 1

[1] Create wiggley horizontal line (1pix thick is enough) of any colour you fancy
[2] Create a second wiggley (or just curved) horizontal line of any other colour you fancy
[3] Seperate the lines by a reasonable distance on the page (one under the other)
[4] Select the Blend too (W) and blend the lines using 99 steps
[5] Draw a vertical wiggley line through the blend (start and finish outside the blend)
[6] Set that line to no colour
    [7] Select all (Ctrl+A)
[8] Select the blend tool (W)
[9] Press the 'Blend along curve' button on the info bar.

    stage 2

[1] Draw another horizontal wiggley or curved line through the blend (start and finish outside the blend)
[2] Set no colour to line
    [3] Select all (Ctrl+A)
[4] Select the Blend tool (W)
[5] Press the 'Rotate along curve' on the info bar.

    Optional

    [1] Select all (Ctrl+A)
[2] Select the Blend tool (W) and change the steps on the info bar to whatever you fancy.

8mb flash demo of the blended lines method previously described.
Might be slowish on dial-up (sorry ) - Click pause and let it buffer before playing.
(I didn't record any audio so as to keep file size down..)

They make great desktop wallpapers! and if you use the wire frame view you can edit the curve and rotate lines by holding down ctrl and selecting the line. Then use the shape editor tool to change the line. Great idea Steve!

Mighty groovy Steve. This brings back fond memories of my childhood back in the early '70s. I remember driving nails into some cloth covered plywood and making a string art angel and a ship.

Here's a couple of my feeble attempts using your technique. Thanks for the inspiration, instruction and video tutorial they came in mighty handy.

I'm feelin' kind of strung out, now. Time for a break.

Here's a bit of a 'twist' on the basic idea. I blended from a line to an ellipse, added a bit map fill to the ellipse, then I added a few more shapes and a couple more string art blends and voila! I think it looks kind of pre-historic.

Harry, Frances, Bob and John. Good stuff.

Imagination is the only limit. It's the suprising results that I find addictive.
Another trick you can try is once you have completed the StringArt drawing, reselect it, click the Blend tool button, then click the 'Blend along Curve' to remove it and again to re apply it. You will find you get a different result again.

You can also get nice results from cloning and flipping.
Here's one that took on a very familiar appearance...
