    I don't agree.

It's much more likely that it's something on your computer that's not allowing the install to complete correctly. The programme itself is very unlikely to be at fault. As mentioned elsewhere can you install it on another computer and try that (at work or at a friends).

How in the world would you come to that conclusion? Dlls go bad all the time. I agree that it's probably my computer setup that's causing the problem but it also may point to a problem in the program itself either because something is corrupted or something is incompatible.

Installing it on another computer will only prove that it's my computer setup that's at fault - that still leaves thousands of variables open to elimination.

I'm wagering the export filters (dlls) are either crapped up or there's just a conflict with my particular setup. It's up to tech support to provide some direction in this and they haven't to this point although I have been in touch with customer service (via email) since yesterday.

Marse installing on another computer will determine if you have received a defective CD or not. It is possible the CD has a flaw and not your computer.

As you said there are possibly thousands of things that could be checked on your computer. By eliminating or verifying a bad CD will be one less thing to check or the only thing needed to be checked.

Yes, of course and thanks to whoever originally suggested that. However, when I did tech support I never told a client to install it on another computer without first determining what the issue might be. It's nonsense.

Let's say it works on another computer. Does that actually prove it's not defective? Not really. It just installs better. Being a digital media and susceptible to minor flaws, the CD might be skipping at a particular place on my system, could be just two bad installs...I just don't think installing it on another system is going to be very helpful. If it crashes on another system then yes, it proves something but what that something is is still open to discussion.

However, I will indeed try it on someone else's system and see what result I get for whatever that proves.

    Thanks again for everyone's help.

Thanks Marse for taking the time to check the CD's integrity.

If Xara3D installs and works correctly on another PC we can begin checking what is happening on your system.

If you go to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/256872 you can download Microsoft's Dependency Walker utility. It is a free utility.

Follow the directions given in the More Information section on the page in the link above.

In Step 2 the file you want to Open is C:\Program Files\Xara\Xara3D6\X3D.exe

After Step 5 try to export a still image. At that point the crash should occur as before but the Dependency Walker will have created a log showing exactly what was happening when the program crashed.

That log will help isolate the cause of the problem.

I had not suggested using Dependency Walker before as I did not know it was a free utility until a few minutes ago. I always associated it as being a part of Visual Studio (which is most definately not free).

    Isn't that what I said .......

In my experience, I have never had an original CD fail ....... NEVER. I have had lots of installs fail through something on my computer aborting the install etc.

What I said is "The programme itself is very unlikely to be at fault." NOTE: Unlikely ...... I still stand by that statement.

I know it doesn't help, but at least trying to install on another system would HELP to determine whether or not it's the CD.

Agreed DLL's go bad all the time, but not usually whilst they are installing.

It's not the CD. I went a different route and downloaded a copy of the 3d installation. After uninstalling the old version, I re-installed using the download. Same result.

The Walker program produced the following results attached as a text file.

Marse it will take me some time to look through the log text.

So far I've looked at the first 156 lines and there are several errors but they are not related to Xara3D but to other processes being called on your system.

    Stardock is having some issues.

Your system is creating and deleting timer queues several times.

I see that Lenovo Client Security Solution is in your system Path. Are you running an IBM Thinkpad or Lenovo laptop?

The last thing happening in the log is OleUninitialize is called in COMDLG32.DLL. COMDLG32.DLL is where the standard Windows dialogs are located. Things like the Open, Save, etc dialogs.

I'll have to continue examining the log tomorrow.

I have been awake for 29 hours and need some sleep before going to work again tonight.

I really appreciate your help. I have an intense intellectual curiosity about this even if I never get it resolved. Thanks again.

RE: Stardock - that's new. I just loaded it in about a week ago. It wouldn't account for previous issues with Xara.

I have a Lenovo desktop computer.

Don't understand the timer queues thing well. I'll try to get up to speed on that.

Amazing to me how much work you personally are doing to help me when tech support hasn't tried squat. Their (Xara's) customer service dept is relaying messages from me to them but I haven't heard anything from them directly.

I can only say thanks again. I appreciate the effort everyone is putting out. I'm not sure this will ever get resolved, though.

    marse, et al,

I know this is a long snippet from the MS Dependency Walker log file that was posted but take a look at the red highlighted sections. Is the MOZYSHELL.DLL used in the Xara3D install? is it corrupt? is it part of another application that is interfering? or something else. I did a quick Google search for MOXYSHELL.DLL and it appears to be part of an online backup program.

Does this ring any bells or am I skipping off down the wrong path? This was just the first thing that 'jumped' out at me after perusing the MSDW log. If it helps, I'm glad to have been of service. If not, oh well, I gave it a try.

    Good luck to you, marse...
