I have to say, when I first heard about an looked into HDRi I was immediately unsure just what it was all about. Soon after I found examples that took my breath away.
I downloaded and played a bit with various HDR software, PhotoMatix being the one that at the time gave the best results.
Along the way, it struck me that the problem here is that you have to plan ahead. That is, you need to bracket your exposures ready for later HDR assembly.
What if you already have single shots that could benefit from the HDR treatment?
Well, shooting in RAW gives some advantages here, you can play with the exposures much more successfully post-shoot than JPG's, thereby creating a set of under/overs to use for HDR tone mapping.

However, what if you only have JPG? Can you treat a dull image to some High Dynamic tone mapping?

Well yes, it's possible.

I saw a 2007 review about PhotoMatix a short time ago here where an example was given as a 'before and after'. I immediately saw that the improvments given to the original could be reasonably acheived even in a relatively simple bitmap editor such as Xara Xtreme4.

Here's a result from one of my photos using Xtreme4 only. I call it HDRm (m=Mimicry).
Compare my result to that shown at PhotoShop Insider, I think you'll agree that Xtreme can do quite well

John... Well, HRDi is all about manipulation... Rich is learning and exploring --- please don't crap all over his explorative posts. He's trying to figure it out and to find his way. Have you ever given it a try yourself? Or you see no point or purpose, or possibilities, of HDRi imagery at all?

HDRIs using a single image. The images were adjusted in Lightroom 1.3 using the tone tool. When the images get saved, the meta data is the same as the starting image. Enhancer doesn't see these as different, and doesn't work. I found that it was necessary to save again from another application or save from Xara. In the first case, the meta data is there but works as though there isn't any. With Xara, the meta data is gone. Enhancer sees the images as not having EV data, and will merge the images.

I haven't got any good result from PI yet.

Both were made from a tone variation of a single image. I used three images for each. One was done in Enhancer HDR, and the other in XXP. In XXP, two images were made bitmap transparent and layered over the third. One saturating object was used. I did a little enhancing of one image for color correction.

I was seeing artifacts with a single image when modifying the EV, and I am still getting the same thing with the tone adjustment. Using a single image isn't recommended, but I am not always able to shoot a set.
