Some kind of tree-view for nested layers seems sensible.

However, grouped layers are more difficult to represent visually - since the layers could be some distance apart in the layer stack.

But I'm sure if Xara do implement this sought-after feature, they'd be on top of the user interface... as this is what makes XX/XXP such a pleasure to use.

I'm pretty happy with what Adobe has done with Flash and Photoshop..

    Yes, Photoshop's layers are great.

I assume, Xara has some problems with the underlying data model in Xara Xtreme: As far as I remember, the .XAR fileformat doesn't support nested layers (correct me, if I'm wrong).

Alright here is my list of layer functionality Ideas. Some of these are based on things other people have said.

    - Tree style nested/grouped layering system
    - Multiple layer or layer group select using some type of key command
    -- Lock/Unlock all selected layers
    -- Show/Hide all selected layers
    - Insert New layer above/below currently selected layer
    - Select layer/group based on currently selected item in the drawing board

I prefer Photoshop style layers but only because this is the most requested format, from my customers, for product delivery. So having the layers work like and export to Photoshop in the same manner would be a dream.

    Those functionalities would be great.

I was also disappointed not seeing any advancement in layers for v4.

I'm jumping on this train too. 3DS MAX has spoiled me rotten with their excellent layer management.

In addition to the features mentioned I'd also like to add:
    • Create a New Layer or Copy a Layer without a dialog box coming up first (or allow the user to define this action in Options or the registry).

DrawPlus X2 has some nice Layer features I'd like to see:

    • Layers can display Objects contained on the layer. This can be expanded or collapsed with a Plus Minus button. Groups of objects also have this Plus Minus button. Clicking on an Object or group selects it in the drawing area and selecting it in the drawing highlights it on the layer gallery. Clicking on an Object within a group in the gallery selects that object in the drawing area.
    • Objects can be moved to different layers by dragging the object or group in the Layer gallery.
    • Selecting multiple layers allows you to merge those layer contents.
    • Each layer displays how many objects it contains. Each object displays the type of object it is.
    • Each layer and object has a small icon of the items it contains. Mouse over this icon and it zooms up about 4X.

Better layers gets my vote, in fact I think all the galleries could use an overhaul.

May I add a suggestion? It would be nice to be able to hide and unhide individual objects, as in Illustrator. This would be helpful when manually tracing an image, for example.

Hope you don't mind a newbie chiming in...

If we are voting group layers would make my life much nicer!
