Your illustrated response to Vitality's physics lesson is great. If I had to make any constructive criticism it would be about the highlight on the watch crystal. For the past few months I've been lurking around the vintage watch catagory at ebay.com - I love to see and read about all the great vintage timepieces. One thing I've noticed is that unless the crystal is very scratched they don't usually display the kind of highlight you applied to your watch. Below I've posted a photographic example of a watch face. The image was snitched from ebay. (Check out the pocket watch listings here).

Note that with a good crystal the reflections are crisp and quite subtle. I also note that bezels - ie the gold ring around the crystal - almost always cast a shadow on the watch face.

I really like your minute markers. Am I the only one who counted to confirm that there are sixty!

    Regards, Ross

    Many thanks Ross,

Your photo (swipted from ebay ) is worth a thousand words as the saying goes. I followed the link and found some great watches. I'll be busy for a while trying to get the details in place.

So many helpful tips. What a great forum, and great people.

Caution is advised regarding ebay. It is highly addictive. Time spent browsing ebay is time that could have been spent with loved ones... like xara.

ebay can be addictive, but XaraX has me too hooked for anything else to take it's place.

With Ross's tip and a bit of Xara jeweler's rouge to get the scratches out, the crystal looks much better IMHO.

Now all you have to add is the little "soquili made" markings at the bottom of the dial.

Maybe I'm pushing my luck a bit, but would it be possible for you to post the XAR file of this image. I'd love to be able to take it to pieces and see how you made it.

    Michael Ward

P.S. This thread has given me a lot of things to think about in my own designs... thankyou!

Michael, I'm posting the XAR file as you requested. There are probably a few of my mistakes covered up among the layers in the file.

    Soquili

Tankyou for posting your .XAR file, it'll really help me to see how you made the picture.

You know, I think one of the greatest things about this forum is the way that people are willing to share their work, and the source files that go with it. I go to so many other online communities where people are afraid of posting their work, or source files, etc. in the fear of getting ripped off.

Maybe it's better we keep Xara as the secret it seems to be, or we may get our lovely little community spoiled by "the rif-raf" ;-)

Thankyou Soquili and everybody who frequents this forum,

    Michael Ward
