As a printed page differs in more than size from a page displayed on the web, I would not try to make one stylesheet for everything. Using:

    <link media="screen" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href=
    <link media="print" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href=

you can link to stylesheets specific to your requirements.
That gives you the ability to omit background graphics, images and whatever you dont want to have printed, and adjust container sizes to your target page size.

If you want your web pages look good in various sizes, you could go for a fluent design that adjusts fine to smaller/larges screens. Just resize your browser window when you look at this forum and see what happens.

Valid points. I think it really boils down to who your target audience will be. Obviously in Soquili's case the corporate client required the lower resolution. Common for his work world. If you're selling prescription drugs or AARP memberships, your target might well be the older set which could use the lower resolution to make items larger, however, if you're marketing MP3's and such, you'll most likely be hitting a significantly younger group of web users who don't require such a low resolution. Then, in addition to all this talk on web design specs, you have to add in next gen stuff like viewing your site on mobile devices, etc. Again, it's really about who your target audience is.

Alright, it's July 2008, albeit only a few months since the last post in this thread.

Do we still mostly concede that designing webpages for 800 x 600 is the standard in layout these days? I am presently considering doing a new layout in 1024 x 768 for my site.

    Thanks.

    There's no way I'll be doing 800x600 - 1024x768 at least.

800x600 may be standard - yesterdays standard.
