tiff transparency in Word?

I'm trying to help my Dad out. He needs to insert a tiff logo into a Word document and we keep getting the white background box. Is there any way to preserve a transparent background in a tiff file while inserting it into a Word document?

Looking at the information at Office Online about the Tiff image support. Tiff with alpha channel transparency is not supported.
