Rather large for a budgie. I don't think I would risk annoying the bird...just wait until he/she decides it is time to talk

Both are beautiful birds!
But, when the one on the right finally talks, you really need to listen!

"I do not think that I will ever reach a stage when I will say, "This is what I believe. Finished." What I believe is alive... and open to growth."
Madeleine L'Engle
Your Gran was correct.
Budgerigar is derived from the Aboriginal word: Betcherrygah old aboriginal dialect word meaning "good food."
Though by todays Western diet, would mean "Good snack"
She always had budgies and they were always tame - one would put its head inside your mouth if you repeatedly clicked your tongue - only for the brave mind - sharp beak - if you didn't stop clicking - ouch!
