Steve the shadows are on by default I believe to make it more true to live.
Xara3D is primarily for creating 3D images for use on a web page.
Using the same background as the target page allows the shadows to work very effectively both in still images and animations.
As newer features were added to web pages features have been added to Xara3D. Exporting to .avi and .swf for use on a web page can still incorporate shadows but the user must ensure they have the appropriate background.
If Jim will be using the animation over a still image it is possible to place that image on the background (may require changing it's resolution or the frame size in Xara3D so it does not tile on the background). Shadows can still be enabled in that case.
