Question What is your day job?

We know each because we use Xara Xtreme. But we do not know much more about one another.

So, in an effort to know each other better... What kind of work do you do?

Me? I'm a graphic and website designer. I create Stereograms for publication both books, magazines and special commissions. I write software reviews for Communication Arts Magazine. And I do Xara tutorials.

    You?

I own a small (owner/operator) Computer Sales, Service & Repair business which I operate Mon-Weds and Saturday mornings. I also have a small shopping site which is very new and only brings in the odd sale so far. Most of my work comes from an established customer base and word-of-mouth.
I also make a few dollars directly from Graphics and right at this moment creating another DVD Photo-Slide show for a Funeral Service (as one of my PC customers, they also promote my other services )
Thursdays and Fridays I work at a small Sign Company in town looking after their PC's and Network as well as helping with designs and fabrication.
I've also been given the job helping the owner promote his Australian Designed (no holes drilled in bonnet/hood) 4x4 and Ute Bug Deflectors.

All graphics used on my sites were produced using XXP of course

Well I had my own Voice / Date / Video cabeling + Business phone / voicemail system business.... (pre-divorce)
Now, I install carpet 3-4 days per week, as well as illutrating here n there. I am currently working on my first children's book, as well as working on a Linux Educational Operating System
But my "first" job, is being a DAD ( finally, a job I truly love)

I work for a Construction Company as a CAD Draftsman (AutoCad) and Estimator, designing new homes. I produced the company website, and do some private website design.

From the website design, I got interested in producing small graphics for buttons and bars and doing logo's.

Whilst doing some of the animated graphics in Photodraw and non-animated graphics in CorelXara, I played with a demo of Xara3D, and was hooked. However, it took me a long time to purchase Xara3D as I had no real use for it, but eventually I purchased it (still haven't used it for anything real). Having purchased Xara3D and joined Talkgraphics, I learn't about Xtreme - That was a definite must have.

Even though I am a CAD draftsman, I have ZERO ability as an artist ........ Darn, don't think I can purchase that from Xara ........

I work for Autodesk's Media & Entertainment division, formally Discreet, as an Application Specialist for TOXIK, our relatively new procedural compositing solution for high-res visual effects [mostly film]. Being an AE involves doing product demonstrations and training but I also have a lot of contact with development, which is probably the most rewarding part of the job [influencing the growth of the product].
My background is in broadcast design, so my real expertise is with 3DS Max and Combustion. I can use AfterFX, but I choose not to if I possibly can. I don't really have the attention span for doing movie work, whereas TV stuff, where you rarely work on a job for more than a few days, suits me perfectly. It is also generally more creative than doing effects compositing.

I currently work for a regional distribution center. Much less stress than my previous job as a wide area network administrator.

I maintain the local desktop computers, write a program or a few as I see a need, and process the electronic files for incoming and outgoing shipments. I also occasionally harrass the network administrator

My work week begins at 6:00 AM Sunday morning with an 18 to 20 hour day. Monday is usually a 2 to 6 hour day actually an evening. Tuesday and Wednesday are 8 to 10 hours that begin about 14:00 (2:00 PM for those accustomed to a 12 hour clock ). Then I have Thursday, Friday, and Saturday as my weekend.

Odd jobs. I'm semi-retired. I've created icons, company logos and also have done online writable forms in PDF format. Obviously, I don't do much.

By day I'm the stereotypical computer geek/Software Developer. I design/support/code/maintain a server platform for a Financial services company that reads and processes real time streaming stock data directly from the major exchanges in the US and Canada and file feeds for exchanges throughout the rest of the work. The server maintains an up to the moment record of the exact price of any stock on the exchanges we support (well, more up to the moment for North America than the world) and provides it to clients that want to valuate their stock portfolios and whatnot.

By night, I'm also the stereotypical computer geek/Software Developer, except that I work on my own personal projects: games, web application back ends, and other geeky things of that nature.

Also I'm addicted to board games. But I try not to let having fun with friends and family get in the way of serious nerd-ery on the computer.
