it reminds me amiga computer and effect called 'bob'
old times...

gemini try to use layers
so you could colorize it more flexible
it could be 1 layer for color and ambient light
second for outer shade
and third for spot

Actually, there are 3 layers, just as you suggest. I may have just used them differently.. I only played around with this for about 15 minutes.
If you like, I'm posting the .xar so you can mess around with it, and then post your rendition

I like it much better off to the right hand side Paul. My only comment is that I think that the spot reflection should be wholly within the sphere. It tends to make it look like it has a slight bump on the surface as it is ........ but what do I know .......

The floor reflection is pure genius.
