Not sure if it still works with the linux but ALT-035 (on the keypad) works for windows. Give it a try, it can't hurt ............

On the American English keyboard the Shift+3 is the # key.

Yeah, I am using shift+3. But as soon as I press the 3, the keybinding for the grid (which is a #) goes off, and my # doesn't get typed in
This is a known bug since July 2006.
