Thread: Transparency

  1. #1

    Default Transparency

I am designing a web site and I am attempting to use a flat transparency on a box of lets say 800 x 600. I want to use this square box as the text area for my pages but I want it to remain transparent, when I upload it to my site so the background is seen through it the box appears as solid.
Where am I missing the boat on this and can this effect be done using Xtreme?
I guess I am looking for the same effect that I have seen with web templates used on my daughters MySpace
    Appreciate suggestions or instructions.
    Thanks,
    Brian

Are you exporting this as a gif or png file ? I believe these are the only formats that will give you transparency on a web site.

and if you export png select 'color depth' as true color+alpha to preserve the transparency

    Thank you so much!
PNG and color depth was the ticket.

And, if I am not mistaken, it won't work with IE 6.

gif will... If you are trying to make a transparent gif... save the room and make it 10X10 pixels and just display it larger. 1X1 pixels are not seen as kosher things by some search engines...

and you are quite probably right
Remi will know he uses png's all the time
[I believe there is a fix for IE6 - but I'm not sure]

if you palletize the png and make one color transparent it will certainly work with IE6 - but then, you may as well use the gif

Right, if it's a 256 colour img with one colour to be transparent, use .gif.
But the whole point of using PNG is for 'alpha transparency', graduated transparency if you like. And of course being able to use more than 256 colours.

The best fix for IE though is Opera 9.22
