    Norman,

I drew two grids for positioning images. The idea is to place the subject at an intersect point. I place the grid over an image and adjust the grid, then snap a rectangle to the grid area. The outer area is to mask the image to better see what I am going to get. Then remove the grid drawing and intr the rectangle with the image.

I Know you are tring to tell me something but the technicqlities of what you are saying are beyond my old brain. Are you saying this is a way to get the main point of interest of a picture to be central.

    Norman,

Not central. More of a position that is more pleasing to the viewer.
For example, a landschape would be 1/3 ground and 2/3 sky. Look up photo composition. I am not very good at this. I position the butterfly eye at an intersection point of a Golden Mean Grid.

    Hi Norman,

I hope you don't mind but I cropped your image to achieve a Golden Thirds version.

If you use Rich's xar file and place the point of interest at one of the intersections you achieve the Golden Thirds rule of images.

They seem off centered to me. A persons eye is drawn towards the center. To add interest, one puts the subject just slightly off center. Postioning for landscape and portraits shots are different. You can bring the subject more towards the top on a portrait shot.

I like this one even better.

A wittle stained glass eliptical transparency with a logrithmic profile over the pic.

    Hi Rich,

Nice site, good info. After reading that site I looked again at your flutterby you posted here and it seems unbalanced towards the left hand side, and the Lilacs are upstaging the butterfly. I tried recutting your photo and unfocused the lilacs and toned them down. What do you think?

I think the lines of the wings draw ones focus to the butterflys head.

My focus was drawn to the antena on yours... It was in the center, it was unfocused behind the antena and the left side of the picture was so busy.

I unfocused the shot by laying a linear tranparency over the cropped picture that was shifted just slightly down and to the left. Grouped them and intersected them with a shape the same size as the original cut. This created an out of focus forground that became more infocus the closer one got to the butterfly.

Then I laid a linear transparency over the lilacs fading from black to transparent to darken them slightly.

This left only the butterfly and the leaf in focus. The leaf just helps to balance the butterfly.

    John,

Looks like you have a much better feel for composition than me. Laura is very good at this, but I haven't got a clue. She always says my images are to busy. And, lines are always leading in the wrong direction. I think this is a good subject for discussion. I know I could use a lot of help.
