Default help with square gradient please?

Basically I have made a square gradient in photo XI that fades from a black opaque colour on the outside to a white, transparent colour on the inside, all on top of of a transparent background. I have saved it as a .png file, so that I can layer it on top of different images in an external program, 'foobar2000'. It looks like this:

I need to get rid off that 'X' shape that is always there when using this square gradient to make it a more smooth effect. Let me stress also, that using the circular gradient is not an option, because of the final effect that I'm trying to create. I think I am looking for an option to use a square gradient with circular edges, rather than a sharp edged square gradient.

Can this be done at all?
    Any help is much appreciated

Try applying a Gaussian Blur with a radius value of, say, 30 or more to the gradient.
