Breaking Up Text

I would like to know how to break up a word into separate editable objects. I want to have control on every character in a word or a group of words.

Convert to editable shapes>ungroup>ungroup(yes twice)done

'convert text to editable shapes' and then 'ungroup' [both on arrange menu]
you may have to ungroup more than once
