I don't have illustrator, but any Adobe product I've ever used is a memory hog. Your processor (assuming its a Intel P4) is a little on the slow side, but should be sufficient. If you are running Windows XP, you are certainly running the minimum RAM. I would suggest 2gb of RAM with a minimum of 1GB.
You'll notice a nice performance increase with a ram upgrade.

With all that said, make sure your system is clean. Run good spyware and virus software.

I'd certainly go along with Crypto regarding memory, especially if you want to run other things at the same time..
Its questionable whether a 1.6 GHz 256 MB laptop could be upgraded that far, not impossible, but it would need looking into.
Maybe is better to upgrade to a new machine then if this is possible.
Abobe would be happier too on a machine with a second hard drive to hold the scratch files.

Handrawn is absolutely correct. Not sure you could add that much memory to an older laptop. If you are unsure, consider using crucial to help you determine your options.

The truth is, given the advances that processors (dual core) and other hardware have made, to include amazing amounts of RAM, it truley would be better to get a new laptop if you can afford it. But we're talking a difference of 200 bucks or 2000. Only you know which option is best.

Like everyone else here I have to agree that buying some memory modules would help. I have a laptop with the same type of processor as yourself although I don't use it as my main drawing tool it is useful tool to show to clients and to work on small jobs if I am doing something else. Running Illustrator on a faster laptop might make the splash screen hardly be seen and the load period be much quicker your actual drawing experience will hardly change and also the time it takes to save a large file will be quicker.

I would find it hard to recommend any laptop as a main tool to use on the Creative Suite if you are working on large files unless you are willing to splash out mega bucks and that it always seems to me a waste of money just for the convenience of a portable desktop and even then it will be a compromise.
