    Unhappy PAINTER X and WinVista

I'm running Windows VISTA and the other day I installed PAINTER 9.5...it worked perfectly in WinXP, but in VISTA I start it up, the interface loads, I get 2 white boxes in the window {where the "Welcome Book" should be}, and none of the menus work.
I have VISTA UAC turned off, running as Administrator.
I get no error messages, the program simply won't finish launching.

I contacted Corel support and they replied: Painter 9.5 does not run on Windows Vista and we currently do not have a schedule release date for an update at this time.

    Nice.

    So I got PAINTER X.
Uninstalled PAINTER 9.5, cleared all folders and registry of any stray files, rebooted, installed PAINTER X, running program as Administrator.
Exact same thing happens...interface loads, I get 2 blank pages where the "Welcome book" should be, and I can't go any further...
most of the menus are greyed out, and the ones that aren't don't work.

Anyone else having problems in VISTA?

Did you run Painter X as Administrator, I know others have had this problem.

    Thanx, Christine!
Yup, I had heard of other types of problems that were solved by running as Administrator...unfortunately, that didn't make a difference this time.
I even created a new user account in case PAINTER had a personal grudge against me...same results.

I am so hoping it's not a hardware problem...I'm not going to dump this computer when PAINTER is the only program I have problems with {even MS Flight Sim X does surprisingly well on this rig}.

upshot is - due to a clash between painter and his printer software [!] under vista, he got similar problems to what you describe.

hell will freeze over before I go vista anytime soon.

A very good friend of mine owns a computer store locally and he said to wait year before buying Vista. It is still replete with bugs as we as hardware/software conflicts. Microsoft bit off too much and we are paying for it.

Only a year huh? Sounds like an optimist your friend
Trouble is, its not just a change of operating system, there is software that wont and in many cases never will port across.
There's harware that won't work - some of it quite expensive to replace.
You know what - from where I stand what MS have done is leveled the playing field considerably between Windows and Linux in terms of cost of migrating.

I wonder if they remember IBM?
