    Hi all,

I created this business card and now need help understanding the file specs to print it using www.overnightprints.com/main.php?A=bc_specs

They ask that the card have embedded images. I don't know exactly what they mean by that. Can one of you pros take a look at my card at tell me the best way to save it so that it will work with for this print shop?

    Thanks,
    Steve

    Hi Steve,

Don't you wish all graphics programs used the same lingo?

    Embedded images = No Layers
Convert text to Outlines = Convert text to curves.

The GOOD thing (according to the spec link) is that you can export as a 300dpi RGB TIF file (something XaraX does very well) and that should make you and your printer very happy.

    Ed,

Thanks for interpreting the lingo. It does help to make sense of their request. However, this print stuff throws me a curve and could use your help to assist me with saving the file as a bitmap. They ask that the file be saved 1088 x 638. However, that warps the circle in my image with the donut photo and text to curve. I guess I can redo it to fit that size. If there is a faster/better way pleas let me know.

    Thanks,
    Steve

    Hi Steve,
I think the aspect ratio is off a bit on their spec page ... I get 1088 x 701 when I export the card at full bleed size to RGB .tif format.

Here is the card as I would format it.

    Steve,
Export as .tif and change the dpi setting to 300dpi and under compression choose "none". The file should be 2.2mb in size.

Try that and let me know how they come out http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Printing can be very daunting even for some of us who have been doing it for years.

WebXealot #26 deals with outputting images to pass off to printers and service bureaus and might clear up some of your questions.

What Ed has so artfully laid out has an extra 1/8 inch all around and what is called in the printing business "bleed". Bleed allows a little extra bit of image all around so when the cards are trimmed, even if the trimmer is a little off, there will be no white edge all around. So when you have an image that bleeds off one or more sides of a card, or any printed piece, it is always a good idea to extend the image over the edge by about 1/8".

    Exporting bitmaps

WebXealot 30 and WebXealot 31 provide an extensive review of bitmaps and should answer some of your questions about exporting images in the TIFF (tagged image file format) format.

And if you still have questions, let us know. That is why we are here :-)

Good old Gary, always goes that extra mile.
I wouldn't be having half the fun with XaraX without his help and the amount of stuff he posts here.
I hope we never forget to remind him how much he is appreciated.

Oh and I've just put his name through an anagram solver.

    "a eger pry stir"

    Makes you think!
