I like the idea of using my images for textures. Thought I would look at what is available, and try to find something I can use. There is a free version that I can try and see how this one works.

I've used this software in the past and it's incredibly comprehensive with, for me at least, a relatively steep learning curve. However, I don't think there is a better texture making program available, once you get your head around it.

You could try http://www.filterforge.com/ , which is pretty good.
But if you ask my honest opinion; nothing beats handmade textures.

I have been too busy trying to itemize my taxes in arrears. I did make a blended tile in XXP.
I seemed as though Texturemaker wanted to use homogeneous images as a source. I looked at a few tutorials, but haven't had time to try anything.
I was thinking about using tileable images in XXP an transparency masks, and layering several images together.

using a transparency mask in XXP and blending tiles together.

I have lots of grayscale texture tiles, but they are not all the correct shade for XXP. I found that using the level control in XPE would allow me to adjust the shade, and then use the tile as a mask. When the transparency is invoked, I can use the transparency profile adjustments to make further changes.

XXP, XPE, I have no clue what you're talking about.
Xara Xtreme Pro and Xara Picture Editor Pro.
A brick tile I made from several masks and fills.

Bricks with moss. I used transparency twice on the moss. Once to get the grout area, and once to break up the moss pattern.
