New to graphics and need advice

Being new to graphics and wanting to learn to make better patterns for wood work I have some questions. I am wanting to change pictures into patterns that I can cut into wood to look like the pictures. I have noticed that most people use the PSP to do this and having bought the Xara X I am wondering should I get the PSP or can I do the same with the Xara X? Is anyone doing this and what advice would you suggest?
