Select the object, and click on the paint tool you want (paint brush , chalk , particle brush ...etc.) double click the paint tool if you want for the "brush panel" (can even apply long flat brush shape and also textured brushes) ...... then finally , goto "effect" menu at top , and click "Paint on Edges" (or use "shift-p"). And it should work. Don't forget to give the brush a little 'soft edge' to get rid of the jaggies (if you want). Also, I noticed with my graphics tablet (Wacom graphire 4"x5") if the tablet pressure is set to anything but 'none' when you do this , it doesn't apply sometimes (certain tools). So set it to none before. Hope that helps
