    Faking, cheating and trickery .
    Yep! I agree, a combination of lense distortion + cut and paste is the answer for a flawlessly magnifide image.

    On the last one I enlaged the x,y circumference of the sphere, then booled it with a torus for less curvature along the edge. That slightly reduced the tendency of the underlying image wrapping around the circumference of lense.
