Because you probably have "Quick Mask" mode turned on by mistake. Press the Q key and then try typing again. http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Or very possibly you have the Type Mask Tool selected by mistake. Hold down the Type tool button on the tool pallet to change it via the drop-down menu.
