There are two ways to do this sort of job.

    1. The 'purist' way is to trace by hand.
    2. The second way is automatic tracing, done by a bitmap tracer, and many programs have this function, eg xara xtreme, inkscape, illustrator, corel draw.
I used the one in inkscape [http://www.inkscape.org/] - my preference.
You still need to learn how they work of course.

Being able to trace by hand is a very useful skill in terms of vector drawing.
Also not all images lend themselves to accurate/useful bimap tracing.
Hand tracing is also the best means of extracting part of an image, and frequently the only method that really works.

I'm assuming you have xara xtreme and a good tutorial on bitmap tracing should you be interested is here:

Thanks again for this - just one more question - if I were to hand trace (using Xara Xtreme) a logo and wanted to cut holes in what I'd traced (so parts of the middle of it were transparent), how would I go about doing that? Thanks again for your help (you're quick on here!)

the very basic principle attached - check out the help movies in xara, changing objects section covers the subtracting and intersecting of shapes.

    Hello Chris,

I found that setting the texture size to 108.7% fits very well.

In Xara Xtreme you can draw the individual shapes without having to cut out.

    Hi HolySoldier
    and welcome to TalkGraphics

Please refer to the post at the top of this forum - link here:

If you don't own xara3D download the trial and give it a go - post #7 in this thread is an excellent tutorial.
If you get stuck there will be people here willing to help.

    heres another place to start:

Thank you both for your help, I am very impressed with the product so far.

Apologies for being a pain (I've searched where you pointed me for answers to this but I couldn't find out; I guess that's not to say there isn't one, but I couldn't find it!)

I've managed to find myself a better quality image and have traced it far better (I think), only I've traced several different parts separately. The problem now is that when I come to do the intersection, I can only intersect one traced section with the main image. Does that make sense?

In the attached images you may be able to see what I mean - I can only select one of those black outline together with the entire image in order to intersect. I have tried doing one at a time (selecting the newly intersected image together with another black outline), but this does not work either.

The second image is to show that I've also got some images behind some of those black shapes that also need to be included if at all possible. The third is the new source logo, which may well be irrelevant.

    Thanks again

    Chris

    Chris

The image on the right is your trace?
Instead of intersecting can you not just fill each traced section with black?
And then group them all together when you have finished?
EDIT - I mis-read your post sorry - can you clarify why you wish to intersect - it seems to me that you have the black shapes as they should be - what is it you wish to remove?

The first and second images (17" screen, so I've got one under the other) are both my trace - the second one was with the view quality turned right down so you can see there are outlines under outlines that I also need..

If I do select all, then intersect the whole image disappears. If I select one of the traced sections along with the original dimensions of the image, then intersect it works for that one, but nothing else and I can't intersect the other sections after that. I'm not sure I'm explaining this brilliantly, but the image attached should explain. As you can see, I've intersected the first section and on trying to intersect another section, I get the error displayed in the attachment.

Ok - this is a separate question. and I'm not sure why you wish to intersect here.
Having traced the black shape[s] you should group and import these into xara3D then import the texture onto them as before.
You cannot lay the texture onto the shapes first in xtreme, that will not work.
Perhaps I am missing something here?
