help me save an old picture

i've scanned this

i've worked on it and it now looks like this.

i'd like to make it nicer and get rid of the marking where the tear used to be.

what is the best way to do this?

you did a great job on the restoration! are you talking abou the yellowish mark in his face? i dont have time right now as i am off to work but when i get home tonite i will try to fix it and post the file here. in the mean time try convering the pic to blk and white to see if that does what you are wanting. you scanned the pic as color so it shows the yellow aged area from the tear.

again great job on the restoration its 1st class work!

thanks for your quick reply and compliments.
i do mean the yellowish mark in his face.
desaturating does make the mark look better but i like the yellowish tint. i'd like to keep it.
if you do get a chance to fix it, would you mind fixing the higher quality version (here)?

I'd like to learn what the best method to clear that mark is.
also, is there an efficient way to get rid of all the noise? i got rid of alot of it (from the face) manually but it's a very slow process.

I tried to do as you asked but couldn't do it so how about a colour version
i can change the background if you wish.

Put your picture in psp and went to colours a clicked on grayscale I think it got rid of your yellow smearing see what you think

that's great.
i get the same result in photoshop with desaturate.
i got a better result when i sampled the color of skin near the mark and painted over the mark in a new layer with the blend mode set to "color".
what method did you use to color him?
can you please send me the colored version of him (without the background)?

I think I can send you the subject without the background but will have to work out how to do the transparency. The cutting out of the subject was done in Xara Xtreme but I did the colouring with PSP. I was unable to produce it as a transparecy despite it being .png and transparecy selected but if you have another backgound and cannot cut out subject send me the background and I will do the rest.

If you had Xtreme it would make the task a lot easier. I could send you the .xar file and you could put what ever backgound you wanted.

i'll try coloring it myself with different colors.
that green just won't do.
i'm pretty sure i'll be able to get rid of the background.
