NOTE: This thread has been split from an earlier thread - Egg

perhaps a little off topic but this does have to do with clipboards
i don't understand the options shown in this Xara paste dialogue box
i always choose just bitmap, but sometimes there are THREE choices
    what do they mean???

    Paste Special:

"Sometimes when you paste the contents of the clipboard into a document, it could be inserted using several different formats. If this is the case the paste Special dialog box will appear so you can choose a format.Sometimes when you paste the contents of the clipboard into a document, it could be inserted using several different formats. That from Xara Xtreme help file.

As to the other two - I am uncertain.

I moved these posts as I think they're worthy of their own thread.

Personally, I always choose Bitmap. Device Independant Bitmap seems to import the image to small.

Me also but of what use is the 'device independent' option?
    Is it ever preferable?
    If so - when?
    We should be told.
I can find no reference to this in the help files.
Not that it matters, I'm just bein' interested.

Device Independent Bitmap is used internally by windows and it is converted to a format used by a device it is 'displayed' on: screen or printer or hard drive. It can be referred to as a 'raw' windows bitmap.

That doesn't make sense to me.
Not that what you wrote doesn't make sense, that is fine, (thanks) what doesn't make sense it it being named device independent.
If it is converted to a format used by a device it might more appropriately be named device dependent?

Or am I missing summat as usual?

Do you know when one would want to use this device independent option?

It is device independent in memory until it is converted to the destination device format.

You will never actually see a device independent bitmap (DIB) unless you are a portion of RAM memory
For anyone to see it, it is no longer device independent.

For use within Xara, I can not think of any reason to select that option. Some low level C/C++ functions in the Microsoft Foundation Classes require a device independent format. But personnally I'm trying to cut down on using those, too little memory remaining in the old brain pan.

    Ah, thanks.
Not that I need to know - it is just infuriating when I read terminology for which there is no explanation immediately available.

    Hi,

I know this is an old thread, but I found this behavior annoying and seems to be of no utility for the normal end-user.

Maybe an options to remove this special paste bitmap option?

    Regards,

    Marc
