    Default registering domain?

Wanted to know if it is safe to pay and register a domain name for one of my clients under my own personal credit card? Following is the reason why my client does not want to do it herself.

    1. The client does not like entering their credit card number online.

I would think the dangers of such action would be the following, correct me if I am wrong.

    1. Could be held accountable to any content or action that results from the site since it is registered
    under your credit information.
    2. Responsible for future payments

Could you please inform me of other down side of doing this? And how I can solve this problem?

This is done all the time. The safest way:

Register it in your account. Have you customer create an account with the same registar and "transfer" the domain name to him once the job is completed AND PAID FOR.

Do iron it the details in the contract so you don't end up paying for it in the end. Most registar allows for other payment methods once domain is there and registered with them.

Of course once the domain is transferred, the client will then have to take care of renewing, which will just put her back to square one. Quell her fears. I'd explain that using her CC online (on a secure connection) is actually safer than using it in a brick/mortar establishment. Alternately, contact the registrar and explain the situation. I'm sure they'll have other ways to pay.

One can always get a prepaid credit card for such online transactions, and sure, there are many times, additional options, depending on policies of who it is you are dealing with...

Agreed, clear contracts, with updates (inits) if required, is the only way to go... once we agree on these terms, up front, and sign to this effect, (usually including fee framework ), the rest is/was all about design, content, and the delivery... the fun part

    Default registering domain?

On the subject of domains & registering ...

I am in the process of transfering a domain and hosting.
The existing host requires a £45 release fee.
Is this common practice or am I being ripped off does anyone know please?

    Intbel,

    I feel for you...

You are being totally ripped off... Unfortunately, it's a very common way(practice...) for hosting companies to rip people off.

If the domain name is important to you - never - ever - let a host register it for you, as you have no control over it (heck, it's not even yours at that point...) The £45 release fee (or whatever they demand) are "release fees" - "the difference between the a regular registration and their "rebated" price" - "administration fees" --- "make up your own here..."

    Your options:

    - Pay whatever they want. They might even ask for more after the initial £45 for other fees (if they are complete bastards). Check it!

    - Let it expire and try and snap it up.

    - Register a new one (yourself). The negative being that if it's well established it might take a while before people get used to it. You also lose backlinks, pagerank etc.

In support of what Risto said... I'm just reading this book on how to make your site a luxury for promotion, and their advice is:

If you want to sell something, commercialise your site in a way then never ever let a hosting service register your domain name for you.

There is a trial going on in here right now for the site www.pokemon.co.il
The company is a sueing a kid, who started this site when was 13 and now is 19. So a domain name is very important.
