Links to other than html

I am trying to add a button on the menu for people to download a word document (news.doc). I have a newsletter button and I uploaded the file but when I click on it I get an error page.
I can't seem to get it working.
Here is the link I am trying now.
\\www.treatment-works.com\news.doc

When clicked on, I see it's called "file\\www.treatment-works.com\news.doc"
on the lower left side of the browser window.
What am I doing wrong?

The link works for me, I get the offer to save or download the document although the document seems to be in code? form not plain english

I guess I've got it wrong , check your source code and see where it is calling the info from. it may be calling it from your hard drive and not your website.
