In Xara, the white makes things transparent. It is opposite of EGD.The grayscale image is inverted to make the image transparent except for the high lights.

In EGD, I use erase blending and fog strokes. More of a real time method.

Both transparent methods are non destructive.

The second image was done in EGD.

I made the background on the gray skull to white. This will make that area transparent. I painted a copy of the image with a white brush, and made a bitmap copy. Then applied the grayscale image to make it transparent.

I built a PNG mask starting in Extreme. Needed to increase the density to get it to work in EGD.

Erase depends on transparency, and everything was erased except the centers of the shell plates.
