    Default Lighting Effect

    Hi All,

I thought that I might share a little technique that I found to be very useful while messing around a bit...

I wanted to make technological looking frame for the forms/windows in my game... you can see the final result below which is rendered with the border 100% opaque and a variable level of transparency for the inner green part.

The green part was nothing special... just an outer glow effect around some lines however the frame border was created in about 5 minutes from a simple monotone grey shape in paintbrush and photoshop's lighting effects filter

    1) create new image with black background and copy frame image into PS. select using magic wand with 0 tolerance and clear

    2) select lighting effects filter and set following properties

    Light type: Omni
    Intensity: ~ 50%
    Matte: ~ -40%
    Material: ~35%
    Exposure and ambience: slightly negative

    3) The important bit... in the texture channel box select layer 1 transparency, make sure white is high is ticked and drag the slider all the way towards mountainous...
