    Default Where is the source?

    So where is it?

The whole point of Open Source software is that I can access the source to modify it and eventually contribute, isn't it? How to contribute when the source of this so called Open Source software is not available?

Yes, of course, I have read it.

No word about the sources though. Just a link back to where I started, the site http://www.xaraxtreme.org/ where the tool is advertised as Open Source. And then there is stated that this hopefully will be "a community effort".

Now I wonder how this should happen without being able to get hands on the source. I think they have no idea what Open Source really means.

As long long as the sources are not available it is no real "Open Source", regardless what the license says and there will be no community and they will never get it finished.

So long, will come back when sources are available,

    Nyckelpiga,

Sorry for my inane post... I haven't had my first cup of coffee yet, and I didn't realize how dumb my reply was. Hmmm... I see that you replied to it as I was deleting it.

Your quote: "Now I wonder how this should happen without being able to get hands on the source. I think they have no idea what Open Source really means.

    - Have no doubt, Xara Ltd. do know what Open Source is... However, I'm not sure if the official release of Extreme (and code) has even happened yet. If it's not accessible - it's coming!

Hang in there, I'm sure someone will be able to clarify. (I'm not associated with Xara Ltd.)

They are still working on porting it to Linux. I think the big schedule in the sky is get windoze xtreme finalized and ready for the CD pressing. Fix the version of Linux xtreme with what they learned from bug reports on windoze, then port the source to linux.

We are still helping charles and crew in the big bug hunt of the windoze version...

I too.. am not associated with xara Ltd. in any form or fashion.

Heck... my family doesn't even want to be associated with me...

It's a work in progress and has only just been announced.

Subject: [XaraXtreme-dev] Updated Xara LX download

We've updated the Xara LX viewer download to version 0.1b.
    http://www.xaraxtreme.org/download/
This includes support for the (almost) full range of Xara fill types,
along with a number of other fixes which means it should now load and
render a much wider range of Xara documents.

We've also updated the Designs folder to include some more examples such
as the famous Microscope design. There's also a Fill Types.xar example
that shows off some of the wide range of basic object fill types that
Xara supports (one of the distinguishing aspects of the Xara rendering
engine is its very wide range of basic fill types).

Apart from progressing the Xara LX preview build, we've been continuing
to work on the source codes files, documentation etc in preparation for
making this Open Source. We hope to start this process within a week or
    two.

"Also the guys are under intense pressure to ship a brand new commercial
Windows release right now and so have very limited time. Indeed right
now we have very limited number of developers purely on the open-source
version. Hopefully in a week or two that will improve. But they have
very limited time to respond to all the posting that they might be
    inclined to."

Hmmm, maybe it would have been a good idea to announce this projects later, after it has really happened?

The announcement was that we are going to do this, not that we have done this. The product contains more than 1.5 million lines of code and so is a very substantial amount of code to ready and prepare. Remember it took Netscape / Mozilla more than a year from their announcement to making the code available - we're trying to do this in a few weeks (at the same time as produce new Windows versions) all with probably ten times fewer staff than Netscape.

Oh and it's not just an announcement - we have created and made available working Linux demos to show this isn't just marketing spiel. We really do have Linux builds working.

    The process will start soon.

    Patience is a virtue.

Although I must admit I have been checking xaraxtreme.org almost daily. The idea of having a quality vector drawing package for Linux is some of the best Linux news I have heard in months. I keep wanting to like Inkscape but at this point it is simply not usable for me.

I'm eagerly waiting for the mac version.

I've been a user of Xara on Windows for over 10 years, but I've just purchased a 17" iMac G5 and I'm struggling to find a decent vector graphics app on the mac (mind, I have only had it for just over 24 hours).

From what I have heard... You will have to wait a while longer for any "decent" vector app on the MAC.... Most are closer to MSpaint than to xara.
