Yes, I agree that file size can be a problem with gif animations but UGA is fairly good, giving plenty of options for optimising etc. Colours do seem to have more of an impact on the kb's than the actual frame size though.
Windmill above has only 3 frames (More would make it less jerky) but the pool animation below has 70.
I tend to draw all my pictures first holding my breath until finally at the end, checking the file size, cursing a bit... and then do what I can to reduce it whether it be by optimisation or reducing frame size.
Must admit though, there are many times that the KB's aren't as high as feared.
I never plan from the start to comprimise the quality of the drawing, just so file size may be acceptable.
