My site can only run the Perl logging script from an SHTML file. I have heard that if all pages are .shtml, it slows loading. So instead I call a log.shtml page from each page via hidden layers.

The downside is I don't get very useful from and to page data - the to page is always the log.shtml one.

Have I got this right, or is there a better way?

    Many thanks...

    Hi Simon ...

Yes, you are correct that calling an .shtml page (ie. an HTML page that uses Server Side Includes)takes longer to load than a regular .html page, simply because SSI has to be added dynamically. However, if they are small to begin with, then there is no reason not to have all your pages logged.

    Jen

Presumably this is minus images, so say <12K? Or less? Thanks.

Sorry, Simon, should've been a little more clear (serves me right for trying to "help" when my brain was so obviously fried!). The "small" pertains to the Server Side Include portion, not the HTML page itself. If you are simply using it to write to a log page, then that definately classifies as "small"!

It's tough for you when you are dealing with everyone from guru to beginner, and people like me who have to cover a wide range of skills but therefore are masters of none!
