After going for ever without a myname.com domain name, I finally bit the bullet. (New domain name and site to be revealed soon)

Anyway, Earthlink.net wanted $20 to register the name and an additional $20 per month to maintain the name.

    Register.com wanted $35 per year.

BUT, I found a really cool site Active Domain.com who charges $9.95 per year!

OK So I was thinking this will be bare bones service. You get what you pay for. Right?

    Wrong.

Their site and services are pretty terrific, and their technical support is great.

I was a bit confused (so what else is new) as to how to point my new domain name to my current server. I asked Active-Domain's tech support to just tell me what I needed to do to point to my current home page expecting to wait forever for an answer. They responded the next morning and said not to worry, they made the changes for me.

    Unbelievable.

Anyway, I highly recommend these folks and their services.

It sounds great except for one thing. Having transferred a domain between ISPs before, it can't be that easy.

How did they obtain permission, so fast, from the other ISP (who ran your first domain for you) to make the transfer? To make the transfer, they need access to the first server, which is a bit iffy.

You have checked the address works? Have you looked to see if they are now listed as the site host ("www.whois.net" shows "com" domains).

Just my 2p but I hope it works out for you.

This is my first domain name site. So all Active-Domain.com did was to point the link to my existing home page.

And yes, the link works, as do the e-mail addresses I set up.

As I am working on a new home page, right now the link gwpriester.com points to my current home page.

    This will change soon.

You have the option of having the link to your existing site be in frames, so all pages will have your domain name home page in the address line. This way when a visitor to my site goes to another page in the new site they will not see the actual page name or actual ISP domain name.

I agree to Gary - this seems to be a great place to get cheap domains, and it is easy to administrate.

One great thing is the ability to create subdomains - if you get your surname as a domain, then you can create the subdomains you want - let everybody in your family get their own domain. The subdomains works at once (mine did).

I clearly misunderstood what was going on, so enjoy not needing to shell out a fortune. Well, it's not that bad except when you want all the other suffixes as well, when it does mount up

I was a bit concerned because my e-mail address on replying to mail sent to gary@gwpriester.com is that of my ISP, garypriester@earthlink.net.

The tech person at Active-Domain said, just change the address in my e-mail software (Eudora).

Why didn't I think of that?

At www.Godaddy.com, domain registration is $8.95/year, less if you pay multiple years! I registered my forthcoming masterpiece's address, and had no problems. Right now, they are the #1 registrar of domain names, according to Internic or ICANN or whoever it is that controls that stuff.

Welcome to the Xara X Conference toographic.

Do they offer the same wealth of services that Active-Domain offer? 50 free e-mail addresses, for example, or the ability to create sub-domains, such as Øystein discovered. And how is there tech support?

If you use a forwarding service to place your site from an exsting server into a frame from your new domain name, search engines will find it very difficult to index you.

Your best shot is to buy server space from your domain supplier, so that yourdomain.com actually resolves to your ISP's webspace. That way, your pages are actually stored on yourdomain.com and you can give clients links to specific pages like www.yourdomain.com/here/there/everywhere.html

With URL forwarding, yourdomain.com simply frames your site from a different server which gives a number of disadvantages (principally the frames problem, but often a lack of custom CGI scripting or other more advanced features such as SSI or PHP, which you would expect from commercial webspace)
