A friend asked if there is a way to print out a list of file names in a folder.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

    Hi Gary,

I would use a "Command Prompt" and redirect a dir to the printer. For example to get a print out of the root directory.
    C:>dir > lpt1

This is assuming the printer is connected to the parallel port on the PC.

Another way in Win2K or XP is to left click and drag selecting the file list in the Command Prompt window, then right click the title bar and select copy. Then paste into Notepad and select print from the File menu.

    Hope this helps.

This image is from a product called "PowerDesk" I think they offer a free version at www.v-com.com. This is what Windows Explorer should have been.

I use the free app Directory Printer from Karenware.

While there check out the many other excellent utilities; all free.

If you want the list in a plain text file try :-
    C:\>dir >list.txt
This will create a file "list.txt" in the directory (folder) you are currently in.

Thanks all. I'm not confident my friend will be able to use any of these, but hey, he's an adult, he'll just have to read the instructions, eh?

He called me yesterday and said when he went to answer the phone he managed to delete an entire morning's worth of work.

After a half hour or so, we got it restored.
