Wow I'm glad I wasn't here at the time of this fun little quarrel, or I would have joined right in and, well, it's over now. So, all views aside, I have desided to give it a go and show just how versatile XaraX is! This near replicate of the original was done in under 5 minutes with only Elliptical transparencies (my usual way of going about things) and a few linear. I hope this is enough proof to get you to practice a little harder in X, as I can see it is needed, this was quite simple actually! So, give it a try, PRACTICE, and come up with your own ORIGINAL piece, and who knows, maybe you'll appreciate the value of X a little more and see what more X can give you than RealDraw.

I would like to see some of your RealDraw pieces however Peter, I've only seen what it can do through the hands of the maker of the program

    Hope this helps

Btw. this rubber duck is mine down to the rubber... it's scanned on my scaner... it's currently an official mascot of Studio Style and it's sitting on my monitor. It's a real scan...

PS: of course shade and plattform is added by me...

Oscar you should know that I'm a XARA positive down to the bone check some of later threads started by me. Or check www.grafika.cz for my tutorials. I use Xara since 1.2 and yes I must admit I had Real Draw installed... it was not more than 1 day and it was unistalled.. it's not simple software... it's another weird program accompained with nice examples.. ;-))

I "dissected" the vector group. 52 ojbects eh. Was that a result of a blend on some sort? Or is that a "trade" secret?

I downloaded your second file and examined it. I learned a lot. I'd recommend others to check it out too.

Could you drop me an email? I have a couple things I'd like to discuss and a file I'd like you to look at.

    Regards, John.

But This is just the way I do shading most of the time, a lot easier for me, You can also do blends (Not too keen on that idea), Feathering works great: Less shapes, but takes time to tweak it just right. Whatever works best for you, I can't tell you how to do it, all I can tell you is how I do it! What you should do is just experiment. You know Xara's tools, see how you can use them wisely to create the above image, find your own way. It is a lot easier to learn from yourself than others. Hope everything works out

I must say, one additional good thing about Real Draw is that it is being developed by someone who has created several patches within recent months to add new improvements to the program. Often listening to suggestions from users. For this Oscar should be commended as one who shows concern for his program and it's users ... this is sometimes a thing which large companies seem to ignore entirely.

Ross here -- in moderator mode! I think we have to respect Oscar's instruction not to post further Real Draw materials here. The camera is Oscar's copyrighted image and he certainly has the right to object to seeing his work posted by others irregardless of context. If Oscar wants to post his work - he will. Oscar, I hope you will agree to this post. If you want the violating image removed please email me and it can be removed. (I personally hope that is not what you want).

That said, Steve you did a great job of demonstrating that Xara X can handle Peter P's inquiry.

Now why was this tut not the second post in this thread?

For me the hardest part is getting the shape right!

In step 3, rather than adjusting the shape, I'd create a 3rd shape (eg a square) that covered the 2nd (bottom) gray shap and then 'subtract shapes' the bits you did not want.

You have to sacrifice some things to achieve certain effects. Xara is a very fast renderer so I really don't mind the added objects, and I'm running on 300mghz and 64mb/RAM! However, I have found another way and narrowed it down to 7 objects with similar results. I had to use the "bitmap copy" tool to get the feathering the way I wanted it with minimal objects, or it would bleed over the edges. It loses some of it's Vector qualities but I hope this is a pleasing and satisfying result. Any problems, let me knowd I'll give it another go!! Enjo
