I need something better than this
Try this tutorial. It's not for gold lettering but it might give you some ideas about how to create a shiny gold (and chrome) effect.

Hi Panfer,
Gary's tutorial is great! I've read it several times ( my memory is not what it used to be )
My attempt isn't better than yours, just a little different.

I used a linear fill set to repeating instead of simple. The .xar file is attached so you can disect it if you like.

Here's a mini-tutorial you might try.
1. Create your text.
Using the Freehand Tool draw a wavy line. Change the point size to about 2 points.
2. Make three duplicates and place them as shown so that the top and bottom lines are beyond the top and bottom of the text.
3. Color the top and bottom lines gold. Make the top middle line pale yellow and the top middle line brown.
4. Create a 50-step blend between the top and top middle lines. Create another 50-step blend between the middle bottom and bottom lines. Groupt the lines.
5. Place the blend over the first character. Duplicate the blend and stretch it sideways to cover the second character. Repeat for the rest of the characters.
6. Group the blends. Select the blends and the text (which needs to be beneath the blends) and Apply Clip View (Arrange menu) to mask the blends.
7. Apply a rounded bevel to the text. Drag a brown color from the screen palette and drop it onto the bevel.
Hope this helps.

Here's something I did before Gary posted the above tips. It started out as a gel button but then I modified it considerably...
