Export dxf or ai (pre-Illustrator3)

I am in a quandary. My 3D program will accept dxf files or Illustrator 3 or earlier, or so they say. Since I will be doing much of my work in slightly deforming flat filled curves in this 3D program, I WANT to do my preliminary sketches in a vector draw program, with layers and fills (I will only export the lines). Since I can't find such an old copy of Illustrator, anyone know of a vector program that exports ***.dxf reliably?
